A wonderful discoveryAn original formation with remarkable musicians. The performance of Calefax Reed Quintet made the colours and moods come out [' The greatest discovery of the evening was the suite of Conlon Nancarrow, the American composer who died in 1997 and who spent the major part of his life in Mexico. His research veered towards mathematical music, and he wrote this piece, very difficult to perform, for player piano. One would imagine it to be austere, but instead it revealed itself to be a beautiful piece, influenced by the jazz, the blues, and rhythmical games. Carried on by their brio, as an encore the five musicians played a piece that another American, Ron Ford, wrote at their request on the basis of a theme of Guillaume de Machaut.
