Calefax International Composition Competition
Who writes the best 'short story' for Reed Quintet?For the 3
rd year running Calefax invites composers to write a composition for reed quintet. Previously named an 'Encore' competition, the elements of an encore were actually deemed to be hard to define, so this year Calefax has chosen the more general term 'composition'. It still needs to be a short piece, hence Calefax promotes the competition as a competition for the best Short Story for reed quintet.
The composition cannot be longer than
four minutes and it has to be an original piece (so no arrangements). There are no age or otherwise restrictions, the competition is open to everyone who would like to put his or her musical ideas onto paper!
A new element this year is that the jury, consisting of the members of Calefax will be extended with an external chairman which for this year will be Calefaxfs composer-in-residence Arnoud Noordegraaf (www.inexcelsisvideo.net).
The winner of the composition competition 2010 will be made public at the PAN Festival on Tuesday December 28
th 2010 in the Concert Hall of the 21
st Century in
Amsterdam. The award is a live performance by Calefax at the PAN that very same evening and a professional recording, also by Calefax.
The composition has to be performable by five players on the following instruments:
1. Oboe or English horn
2. Clarinet in B-flat or A
3. Alto- or soprano saxophone
4. Bass clarinet
5. Bassoon
Only compositions with parts in the right transposition will be taken into consideration.
Deadline for the competition is Monday December 6
th 12.00hrs (local time). You can send your work as a PDF file to info@calefax, or by airmail to Calefax, Piet Heinkade 5, 1019 BR Amsterdam (at latest stamped on December 4
th). Calefax remains the right to take all pieces into their repertoire. No correspondence on the outcome of the competition will be entered into.
