Mad composing competition - winner announced at PAN (30 December 2011)
'Mad' composing competition
This autumn reed quintet Calefax again organizes a composition competition. This annual event takes place under the watchful eye of Theo Loevendie, who will also evaluate the contributions as an external expert. The competition, whose winner will be announced and played on the PAN on December 30th 2011, has two new elements this year. First, there is a theme related to the composition: Madness. In addition there is a new prize: a collaboration project with Calefax for one of the contributors. The result from this collaboration project will be presented at the following PAN. In this way, Calefax gives a composer the opportunity to enrich him/herself with the knowledge Calefax has gained in 26 years experience in for example the area of instrumentation. Here are the details.
Calefax invites composers to create a new work for the annual composition competition. The composition has a maximum length of five minutes, gives on a convincing and original way content to the theme "Madness" and has to be feasible by five players on the following instruments.
1 Oboe, cor anglais or oboe d'amore
2 Clarinet in B flat or A
3 Alto- or soprano saxophone
4 bass clarinet, basset horn or contrabass clarinet
5 Bassoon
The winner(s) is / are announced on the PAN on Friday, December 30th 2011, at the Concert Hall of the 21st Century (Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ) in Amsterdam. The prizes are:
- A live performance by Calefax of the best composition on the PAN 2011;
- A collaboration project with Calefax (spread over the year 2012) with the composer of which the jury thinks will have the most benefit; the final result of this project will be heard on the PAN in 2012.
It is possible that both prizes are for the same person.
